So, what are the current and future furniture trends we can expect to see dominating our interiors? Read on for some insightful inspiration.
A focus on individual taste
In the past, most of us only had a small choice of places we could go to for purchasing furniture. These days, with the advent of the internet and a global market at our fingertips, we have much more choice in where we buy our furniture. This has allowed us to focus more on individual tastes and preferences, so if we see something that we adore that’s been made thousands of miles away, it’s within our reach to have it in our home.
Environmentally friendly furniture
At the same time, there is a growing recognition of the importance of buying sustainable pieces of furniture that have been made with eco-friendly, non-toxic materials and under fair conditions. Many people are choosing to source furniture that has been made locally, or makes use of recycled or repurposed materials.
Our living spaces have been shrinking over time, and this has reflected in our choice of furniture. What this essentially means is that there is an increase in demand for furniture that doesn’t take up too much space, and can serve more than one purpose. Often, this additional purpose might be something such as storage, so you could have a bench with storage at the sides, or a table or bed with storage underneath. Sofas that fold down as beds have also taken off in popularity in recent years, and their growth is set to continue.
The influence of technology
We live in an era dominated by our reliance on technological gadgets, and this trend has started to be reflected in the furniture we choose. Increasingly, furniture manufacturers are creating pieces where they have incorporated slots, stands or compartments within the furniture to house our essential electrical items such as ipods and ipads, etc. The intertwining of technology and furniture will continue for some time to come.
Open any current interior design magazine and you’ll soon notice a preference for furniture within the pages that’s heavily inspired by vintage trends. Many people are shunning modern day furniture in favour for nostalgic pieces that add charm and a rustic influence in the home. Distressed items of furniture rescued from salvage yards or picked up at junk stores are making their way in many of our homes to become fashionable, treasured pieces.
Furniture made from leather has always had a healthy following, because it looks stylish and is easy to maintain – perfect if you’ve got kids and pets at home. However, leather has traditionally been a bit limiting in style and colour, generally the main colour of choice being black. Currently, and more so in the future, there will be an increasing range of styles and colours of leather furniture to choose from, so you can pick pieces that match well with other items in the home.
